Halden Joins New York and Paris as ‘Bold Climate Leader’
The municipality of Halden, a CityZEN public sector partner, is lauded for renting electric cars to employees during the day, and to residents in the evening.
“Halden is first in the future of Norwegian municipalities,” said Mayor Thor Edquist to the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) in February.”
At the time, the municipality had just bought 20 electric cars. The goal was to reduce the local emissions from municipal employees by 120 tonnes of CO₂ each year.
However, using an app residents and tourists in Halden can also rent the cars in the evening for around NOK 80 an hour.
As a result, the municipality is now included in this year’s Cities100 report, an overview of the 100 “boldest projects” in the world when it comes to building sustainable and greener cities.
“It’s absolutely amazing. It puts Halden on the map in a way that has almost never happened before. It is incredibly gratifying that what we do here is noticed,” the Halden mayor says.
